Mongolian Beef : Tastes Better Than Takeout & Only Takes 25 Minutes To Make

Mongolian beef is a classic recipe that’s fast and easy to make at home. Tender, thinly sliced beef seared on a skillet with garlic and ginger, then tossed in a bold spicy(ish) sticky sauce. You’ll say goodbye to takeout Chinese forever.

This inexpensive dish is the perfect weeknight family meal. I often use it as a lunch meal prep with cilantro rice and roasted veggies.

What’s in Mongolian Beef?

Steak: 1lb Flank* Steak, sliced into 1/4 inch strips. I prefer flank but any thin cut will do. Sirloin strip is a great alternative.

Garlic: 5 cloves, minced or pressed.

Jalepeno: 1, seeded and diced. If you prefer a spicy dish, leave in some seeds or add another.

Ginger: 1 inch piece, peeled and minced. I prefer fresh for a more potent flavor. However, the tubed minced ginger is a good alternative.

Scallions: 3, thinly sliced. About 2 tbsp.

Corn Starch: 2 tbsp. This gives the beef that crunchy texture.

Oil: To stay with the theme, I use seaseme oil for this recipe. However if none is available, vegetable oil is a good alternative.

The SAUCE: Soy sauce (1/2 cup), Brown Sugar (1/2 cup), Sriracha (2 tsp), and Corn Starch (2 tsp).

How to Make Mongolian Beef

Prep the meat: Toss sliced beef in a large bowl with corn starch until well-coated. Add 1 tbsp soy sauce and mix until all pieces are coated. Set aside.

Prep the sauce: Next prepare the sauce. Combine soy sauce, brown sugar and cornstarch in a small bowl until well mixed. Set aside.

Cook the meat: Heat seaseme oil in a pan over medium heat for a few minutes until hot. Add jalapeno and ginger, cooking for a few minutes, stirring occasionally. Add garlic and beef to pan. Stirring frequently, cook until beef browns, about 5 minutes.

Add sauce to pan: Stir until everything is evenly coated with sticky sauce. Allow to simmer for up to 3 minutes until thickened. Remove from heat. Top with scallions and serve immeditely.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb Flank Steak, sliced into 1/4 inch strips
